She’s found some good, some bad, and some… unusual facts on (almost) everyone’s favorite morning beverage.

Coffee is an interesting food. Most people have a love-hate kind of relationship with coffee. And you have probably heard lots of controversial facts about it. Today it is good, tomorrow it is not. You love it in the morning, but you know it might not be a good thing for your health.

But then you have heard of people that indulged on daily cups of coffee all their lives and they lived quite a long, healthy life…

Below are the facts that will help you understand if coffee is your friend or enemy:

THE GOOD

In many cultures coffee is still considered a “ritual” and an important part of people’s lives. In our modern times it became everything from a source of energy to socializing and keeping that left hand busy with the coffee mug while typing on a laptop.

As far as health benefits, Ray Peat, PhD states in one of his studies, Caffeine: A vitamin-like nutrient, or adaptogen? that coffee drinkers might have a lower incidence of thyroid disease and cancer, get protection of the liver from alcohol and acetaminophen, have a lower incidence of suicide and get protection against Parkinson’s disease. Coffee provides very significant quantities of magnesium, as well as other nutrients including vitamin B1 and it might stop production of free radicals.

Coffee as detoxification

The organs of detoxification — liver, colon, lungs, kidneys and skin — functionally act a as a “bottleneck” for the elimination of all toxins from the body. If these organs are strong and efficient, there isn’t a problem to eliminate harmful substances. But, if the detox organs are weak and inefficient, a backlog of toxins can occur at the “bottlenecks,” leaving toxins “backed up” in the bloodstream. While cells may be rapidly dumping toxins into the bloodstream, the toxins are not getting cleared from the body quickly enough. This can produce “symptoms of detoxification” or a “healing crisis.”

The coffee enema is believed to be useful in aiding the liver in its processes of detoxification, as well as aiding the colon in its activities of elimination. The efficient removal of metabolic waste and toxins through the colon is vital to the maintenance of health and prevention of illness.

But in this case of course, coffee “drinking” has nothing to do with it!
