Laura Haverland is a beginning farmer in coastal Rhode Island. After years living in New York City crunching numbers for an online grocery retailer, she and her husband decided it was time for them to quit their city jobs, learn how to farm and make cheese, and strike out on their own. They recently signed a lease on an old dairy that is full of cobwebs, rusting tractors, and more tires than they can count. They're still scratching their heads about those choices, but in the meantime they are cleaning up the farm, raising some livestock, and plotting to build a small creamery where they will make cheese and yogurt. She is happy to live in a state that has great respect for coffee milk and clams.
