If you’re one of the many who question the safety of our anti-aging, wrinkle-reducing personal care products, you may enjoy making your own homemade, natural beauty care. The recipe that follows is one of the simplest and dates back to the late Middle Ages. Legend has it that Queen Elizabeth of Hungary restored her youthful appearance with this herbal tonic. While the original recipe likely used alcohol as the base, contemporary recipes typically call for raw apple cider vinegar. The vinegar contains a natural form of malic acid, which is one of the alpha hydroxy acids. Malic acid is especially helpful to those with acne or uneven skin tone.

Queen of Hungary Water

(Recipes for Queen of Hungary Water differ. This adaptation can be altered depending on availability of ingredients.)


3 small handfuls dried or fresh lemon balm

2 small handfuls dried or fresh calendula flowers

2 small handfuls dried or fresh rose petals

2 small handfuls dried or fresh comfrey

1 small handful each dried or fresh rosemary and sage

1 small handful lemon peel

Organic apple cider vinegar

Rose water or witch hazel extract


Place the herbs/flowers/lemon peel in a half-gallon glass mason jar. Cover with raw apple cider vinegar leaving 2 inches at the top of the jar. Screw the lid on tightly. Let sit for a minimum of 2 weeks and up to 6 weeks. Shake often.

Strain the mixture and divide into small jars. Dilute 1:1 with witch hazel or rose water. Dab on fingers and massage onto face after cleansing. Rinse if desired.
Queen of Hungary Water can be stored indefinitely. The tonic works well as a hair rinse and makes a soothing addition to bathwater.
