There’s always a lot going on in the space we call ‘real food’, but not every story generates a whole post of its own.

That’s why we’ve created the HandPicked 8to give you a quick idea of some of the things happening in the wide world of food.

Wow. Close enough to call it the middle of October. Halloween’s coming up. Corn mazes. Pumpkin-flavored everything. And it’s nippy outside!

So after all that, here are some good things to check out–this week’s HandPicked 8.

1. Garden&Gun has this: When Sean Brock talks food, it’s best to tune in. From his new book, Heritage, he gives up how he makes his delicious pimento cheese. Find it here.

2. This is a smile-producing trend. Modern Farmer has put up a post about a program where people “adopt” trees. It’s a fun way to support a livelihood says one participant.

3. Time magazine posits that fermented food not only tastes good, it’s shockingly healthy. The article says chef David Chang calls fermentation “the machinery of flavor”. Check it out.

4. Wheat fields on Long Island? Yes. The Kitchn tells about how The Amagansett Wheat Project re-introduced this famous grain and formed a partnership with a local baker. Pass the butter.

5. New York Times’ Mark Bittman writes about getting kids to eat everything. That doesn’t sound like an easy task, but he’s all about diet, health and eating well. Read all about it.

6. Life & Thyme is a site we like–a lot, and right now they’re presenting a great video telling sous-chef Joseph Johnson’s story. This is a great look into what it takes to survive and thrive in a big time kitchen. Roll tape.

7. Rochelle Bilow used to live on a farm in central New York, now she writes for Bon Appetit. Her book, The Call of the Farm, is a very personal, very enlightening take on her finding herself. A good read.

8. We love this. Some dude named Dan Angelucci has an ingenious new idea and is seeking funds to take it forward. Check out his site and see if you’re interested in helping him out.
