As we’ve built up our community here at HandPicked Nation, we have met some truly incredible farmers, ranchers, makers and thinkers in the real food movement. Which prompted the thought, why not share a little more about the real people of real food with our readers?
Welcome to another addition of HandPicked People!
Monica Dix has an ever-evolving relationship with food, much like the rest of us. Her path has taken her from a pastry baker and lover (along with all the refined flour and sugar that called for) to a personal chef with a focus on pastured meats, whole grains, and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Along with her work in the kitchen, Monica also devotes herself to the growing of food with her work in the Ave Maria community garden. Her goal of becoming a “suburban farmer” seems well underway.
As Monica continues to collect more real food knowledge and know-how, she happily shares her discoveries with her children, the readers of her blog EatYourPudding.com, and everyone here at HandPicked Nation.

Describe what you do in ten words or less. I keep a bunch of people well-fed, and I keep it interesting.
Describe real food in one sentence. Something to eat that doesn’t need pictures of itself, pictures of other food, serving suggestions, or any words on it.
What is your first food memory? Tamarind. Eaten outdoors right under the tree. Also, the perfume of Mami Olga’s lime tree, just standing in its shade.
If you were a food or a flavor, what would you be? Nut butter. Or bitter cocoa. Sometimes vinegar!
What are the five food things you always have on hand? Lemons, salt, kale, cheese, onions. Only 5?
What is the one professional rule you never break? Own up and give others credit.
What’s going to be your next meal? Fried eggs and bacon, coffee, kale & banana smoothie with nutmeg.
